Miniature Mani Stone with Carved and Painted Eyes of Buddha

The mani stone is a traditional Tibetan way of showing devotion. Placed on shines and on mountain passes, they are thought to confer blessings.

This mani stone can be placed on an altar, or used as a household or garden decoration, to remind you of your spiritual ideals.

This carved and painted river stone bears the eyes of the Buddha, a symbol found on stupas (sacred reliquaries) in Tibet and especially in Nepal

The stupa (Tib: chorten) is a common sight in the Himalayas. It is the resting place for the cremated remains of Buddhist saints, and an object of devotion, where mantras are chanted and offerings are made. Many stupas, especially in Nepal, bear paintings of the Buddha's eyes, looking out in the four cardinal directions. This represents the Buddha's all-encompassing wisdom.

The Buddha's gaze reminds us also of his compassion, as evoked in a famous scripture where, shortly after his enlightenment, he looked out at the world and saw beings as like lotus buds in various stages of unfoldment. His life's task was to help us blossom and flourish as human beings, and this mani stone can act as a reminder of the Buddha's encouragement that we make the best of our lives by living mindfully and compassionately.
