Statues of the Buddha are not idols, but are reminders both of the historical Buddha, and of our own innate potential for Buddhahood. A Buddha statue, also called a "rupa," is often the centerpiece of the altar in front of which we sit to meditate. When we bow to a Buddha statue, we are honoring both the Buddha as a teacher, and our own Buddha Nature.
