The Power of Mindfulness: An Introductory Meditation Course Online

Research shows that meditation can bring significant improvements to your health, happiness, and well-being. Now you too can experience these benefits.

Weaving together the latest scientific research with ancient Buddhist wisdom, this four-week course provides a comprehensive introduction to living mindfully. It’s not just about the skills of meditation. You’ll also learn how to take what you learn into action. This course gives you the tools to gain more insight into yourself, and be more at ease and content through life's ups and downs.

Mindfulness is about waking up to a new way of seeing things. And that’s not easy to do on your own. In this course, unlike when you study from a book or CD, you’ll be guided personally by Bodhipaksa, an experienced teacher and the course author. He is available every weekday in the forum to lead discussions and respond directly to questions and comments, and will respond to personal questions via email. Students say this is the most valuable part of the course.

Course topics:

  • Week 1: Getting Out of our Heads – Enriching our experience of life through mindfulness of the body
  • Week 2: Quieting the Monkey Mind – Calming the body and mind with the Mindfulness of Breathing practice
  • Week 3: Finding the Still, Quiet Place – Building on last week's practice, we explore ways to find greater stillness, so that we're able to sustain our mindfulness
  • Week 4: Mindfulness in the World – In the final week we focus on how to develop mindfulness of feelings, so that we can free ourselves from unhelpful behaviors

Three ways to learn:

Learning by reading

  • Step-by-step instructions on mindfulness meditation
  • Clear, practical expositions of the underlying Buddhist teachings
  • Insights from contemporary research in neuroscience and psychology
  • Practical guidance based on the experiences of over 1000 students who have taken Wildmind courses over the years
  • Extensive list of articles, podcasts, videos, and books for further optional exploration

Learning by doing

  • MP3 guided audios for learning and practicing the meditations
  • Weekly exercises to extend newly-learned skills into the context of daily life

Learning by discussing

  • Unlimited discussion forum with daily presence of an experienced teacher who responds personally to posts
  • One private coaching email consultation per week with the teacher

Time commitment

The course is in four modules, one per week. Within that structure, it’s entirely self-paced. You can expect to spend time on each component as follows:

  • Readings: about 30 minutes per week
  • Meditation: I recommend 20-30 minutes of daily practice
  • Exercises: designed to be done in the context of your daily activities, so they shouldn’t take any additional time out of your day
  • Discussion forum: How much time you spend here is entirely up to you. At a minimum, it would be good to show up once a week to report in with your progress.
  • Email: For more personal queries about meditation and practice generally, you can write to Bodhipaksa once a week by email. How long this takes depends on you.

You can be anywhere in the world and participate in this course. We've had students from every continent and dozens of countries. You don't have to be a Buddhist or even interested in Buddhism. No prior experience necessary.
